CASK No. 29.238

Firemen stomp out haystack fire

Age 18 Years
Date Distilled 11th November 1998
Cask Type Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead
Region Islay
Outturn 1 of 240 bottles
ABV 59.0%

The nose has some liquorice and black bun sweetness, but mainly coal tar shampoo, a blackhouse by the shore, burnt heather, smouldering haystacks and fire-fighters’ leather boots. The neat taste is dark, heavy and visceral – intense smoke and intense sweetness – burnt fruit cake, liquorice root, clove and Jolly Jack Tar’s pipe stem. The reduced nose – orange oil, blackcurrant jam, kindling a fire, balsamic onions, tarry driftwood and a seaside funfair. The palate (takes plenty of water) is now sweeter and lighter – burnt sugar and over-done treacle scones – it evaporates teasingly in the mouth, leaving impressions of smoke drifting across hospital car-parks.
