There’s often a lot of debate over whether you should or shouldn’t add water to your whisky. In this video SMWS ambassador Olaf Meier tells us why water and whisky are a match made in heaven.

There’s a misconception that adding water to your dram will ruin it. As Olaf explains in this video, some drams are perfect as they are but others may benefit from a few drops of water.

5 tips for adding water to your whisky:

  1. Start by nosing the whisky and ask yourself: what can I smell? Is it mainly alcohol with little or no aroma? If so, it might be a sign that it needs a few drops of water…
  2. …but before you do add any water, take a sip of the whisky neat to see if you can detect any flavours first.
  3. Don’t be put off by a little cloudiness. If you’re adding water to a SMWS whisky then you can expect the whisky to change slightly in appearance as you do. This is because SMWS whiskies are not chill-filtered – meaning none of the fatty acids have been removed. When water is added it interacts with the fatty acids in the glass, sometimes making the whisky appear cloudy.
  4. Add water slowly. You can always add more water, but you can’t take it out! Start slowly and keep adding water drop by drop until it suits your palate.
  5. Enjoy experimenting! Don’t get bogged down in the ‘whisky drinking rules’. Instead experiment with whisky and decide what works for you.
