Whatever your knowledge of whisky, if you are keen to enjoy a dram and learn while you do then The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Kaleidoscope Bar at 28 Queen Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town should be one of your top destinations.
One of Edinburgh’s prime whisky venues held three-dram tastings every day of the 2017 Fringe Festival during August, giving guests the chance to savour three distinctive tastes of some of the finest single cask, single malt whisky in a venue dedicated to Scotland’s national drink.
As a bar tender and ambassador at the Society, I am extremely proud about the whisky we have on offer. It’s interesting to explore the multiple layers of a single cask whisky with guests and everyone contributes something to the tasting, even if it’s only wide-eyed surprise at how easily they find themselves drinking a cask strength whisky without water.
August is a crazy month for those working while the Fringe is buzzing in the streets of the capital but we can all feel the excitement in the air. This is most tangible in the theatre before the show and in the tasting room. When a guest walks into the Oval Room at 28 Queen Street and sees the lines of glasses holding our liquid gold, the Fringe ethos is written across their face; imminent exploration and discovery.
From my own experience, no two groups are the same, yet they all have one thing in common – a passion for wonderful whisky. The best part of the tastings for me was walking past the door of the tasting room 10 minutes later. Inside was a group of people who, an hour ago, were strangers and are now conversing and laughing as though they’re old friends.
Many things can be shared over a glass and these tastings were a prime example. A dram can speak a thousand words but the drinker shares many more.
