Two SMWS bottlings have picked up awards in the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), out of more than 2,100 spirits judged – the largest number of entries in the competition’s 17-year-old history.

Cask No. 35.177: Caramelised fruit and nut medley won the SFWSC Gold Medal, which goes to products that “are near the pinnacle of achievement in their particular category. They are products that set the standard for all others of their type,” according to the SFWSC.

35.177: Caramelised fruit and nut medley is a 21-year-old bottling from the Society’s Old & Dignified flavour profile, matured in a first-fill toasted ex-bourbon hogshead and described by the Tasting Panel as having “boundless depth and incalculable complexity”.

“We’re delighted to get such a good result in the SFWSC, the first time we’ve entered this competition,” said SMWS spirits director Kai Ivalo. “35.177: Caramelised fruit and nut medley is a fantastic bottling and an outstanding example of cask selection – this spirit and the cask were absolutely made for each other. The award shows what a great job the Tasting Panel does in finding truly exceptional, one-of-a-kind single cask whiskies.”

Cask No. 42.30: Chimney sweep’s romantic barbeque won the SFWSC Silver Medal, awarded to products that are outstanding in their category and “show refinement, finesse, and complexity”. This is the second award for Cask No. 42.30, after picking up 93 points in this year’s Ultimate Spirits Challenge® spirits competition.

Since its introduction in 2000, the SFWSC has become one of the most respected and influential spirits competitions in the world, with a medal award recognised as an affirmation of high quality and an indication of excellence.
