Since the SMWS was founded in 1983, our whisky has only ever been bottled from a single cask, at cask strength, with no water or colouring added and with no chill filtration.
Each cask is unique and by definition a limited edition – whisky as the cask intended. Each cask may only yield a few hundred bottles or much less – and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
That’s the wonderful thing about the Society’s bottlings – but we understand that it can make getting your hands on some of our whiskies a challenge. We want as many members as possible to get the chance to enjoy our single cask whisky, but sometimes there’s simply not enough to go around. So, how can you make sure you get a taste?
One of the best ways is to come along to one of our Members’ Rooms, partner bars or tasting and preview nights, where we’re making more of our in-demand bottlings available for sampling for members.
We want also want to share the love as much as possible, and cut down on any practice of members buying up bottles which they sell on to auction sites. Where possible, we’re holding ballots for members to buy only one bottle of a particularly desirable whisky or a bottling from a new distillery.
Given the demand, you won’t always get lucky. But if you don’t get your hands on the bottle you’re looking for, we have a massive selection of cracking drams on the website – and our Members Services team is on hand to help you find something that suits your taste. There are often more than 100 other bottles online, and trying something different can be a rewarding experience.
Keep your eyes on our regular emails and sign up to follow our social media accounts to find out what’s coming your way and how to get involved in tastings, events or ballots.
And remember, each month there will be always be new aromas and flavours to try for members of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society – it’s all part of your whisky journey.
