Who doesn’t love a good surprise? With Christmas just 6 weeks away, the Society has released 15 brand new bottlings to surprise and delight whisky fans. Better yet – each release has a very low outturn, meaning only a few lucky people will be able to get their hands on them. I’ve picked a few standout bottlings that I’ll be adding to my Christmas shopping list with tips on who you should buy them for.

For the green-fingered
121.95 Toddy for the mind and body

On the nose this exudes honey and brown sugar with a sweet but sharp sherbet lemon note. The citrus on the nose follows through on the palate – lots of lemon, orange and ginger. Woody, spicy notes appear on the finish. With a little water it becomes much more floral with notes of meadows and hay bales. Delicious when enjoyed in the garden – give this to someone who enjoys a spot of gardening.

The name of this whisky is very fitting. Nothing feels forced or overdone and the flavours work together in perfect harmony. On the nose it’s candied orange slices, brioche buns and milk chocolate sauce. To taste it’s sweet and oaky with a very pleasant mouthfeel. You might not think it needs any water, but add a couple of drops and it’s utter heaven. Give this to someone who appreciates real, natural beauty.

At first it’s intense perfumed herbal notes, like Earl Grey tea paired with ginger, cinnamon and cherry chocolate liqueurs. To taste it becomes even spicier, with some sweet flavours like baklava and white chocolate. A drop of water brought out a sharper citric note on the nose. To  taste it became deeper and richer, like black forest gateau. Give this to someone who enjoys time spent in the kitchen, mixing up recipes and trying out new flavour pairings.

This is a magical whisky that packs a real punch. On the nose it’s fig chutney and salted nuts. To taste it’s apricots and prunes and a thick slice of fruit loaf. A little water goes a long way and turns the whisky into a juicy, mouth-coating delight! Just like it’s name suggests, this whisky is the perfect gift for a storyteller.

As soon as you sip this whisky, you’ll wish you had bought more than one. You’ll be reluctant to share it – it’s just too good! On the nose there’s honey roasted peanuts, sweet nectarines and maple syrup. To taste it’s quite dry to start with but then turns gooey and rich with flavours of cinnamon, dark chocolate and pink grapefruit. A drop of water opens it up and lets floral aromas waft in. Buy this for your most refined friends and hope they’re willing to share some with you.

We all know a sweet-tooth. They skip straight to the dessert section of the menu when you go out for dinner and they always have a sweet treat tucked away in their bag for emergencies. This whisky is for them. On the nose it’s charred oak, milk chocolate and treacle tart. On the palate it’s salted caramel with tropical fruits and a hint of mint. Water only intensifies the sweetness with flavours of cherries, honey, biscuits and white chocolate.

66.91 Mechanic’s workshop by the sea

This whisky greets you with beautiful aromatic smoke mixed with the aromas of a first aid box. To taste it’s floral perfumed smoke followed by toasted marshmallows mixed with coastal, salty flavours. A few drops of water enhances the maritime element found on the nose – it’s like a car mechanic’s workshop by the sea.

For the outdoorsy
10.96 A beachcomber’s bounty

Here is a big, bold whisky that won’t disappoint. On the nose it’s beach bonfires and cigar smoke. There’s a honeyed sweetness in there too, but it’s subtle. On the palate it’s sweetness comes through – sherbet sweets and brown sugar. With water the smoke becomes milder and the sweetness is enhanced with some herbaceous flavours. Warming and moreish – it’s the perfect whisky for someone who feels most at home enjoying the great outdoors.
