A delightfully complex whisky – the nose has creosote, tar and burnt twigs from the peat but the innate sweetness trumpet-blasts out spun sugar, brandy snaps, treacle and crispy maple-cured bacon. The powerful palate combines treacle toffee, dark chocolate and rumtopf dessert with earthier notes of burnt heather, tree bark, hickory, leather and Victory V liquorice lozenges. The reduced nose is dark and secretive – barbeque jerk chicken, malt extract, plug tobacco and ink. The palate has over-toasted marshmallows, black bun and Euthymol toothpaste – the smoke is tarry, sweet and restrained – utterly satisfying. After seven years in ex-bourbon wood we transferred this into new oak.
