Sweet, medicinal and oily were the first comments nosing it neat followed by smoked salted almonds, barbequed pineapple, first aid kits, ash on liquorice and tarry ropes. On the palate we were on board a Clyde puffer at full steam, puffing a cigarette on deck. As we stood next to the chimney, we felt the rising heat as well as the salty sea air blowing into our faces as the puffer gained speed. With a splash of water, the sweetness of homemade sticky malt loaf appeared and, closing our eyes, we imagined being on a sailing ship in the Mediterranean Sea.
