Our panellists imagined handing out fruity boiled sweets at the cricket pavilion on the first day of the season (cut grass, wood, linseed oil, new paint, Earl Grey tea, white sandwiches). The palate told us the sweets were mainly tart and citric (lemon-drops, pear-drops, blackcurrant) – with some cinnamon and ginger ones included for the adults. The reduced nose still had sweets (now including Ricola herbal bonbons) along with custard creams, sponge cakes and pastries – followed by the laundry- room aftermath of a gruelling match. The palate with water – pleasant, light and refreshing – grapes, apples, lychees, figs in syrup and home-made lemonade.

DRINKING TIP: While watching a cricket match.
