We were sitting at a large oak table in a farmhouse at breakfast time. Porridge oats with honey (sweet and gristy), washed down with elderflower and lime cordial. To follow, chargrilled pineapple dusted with icing sugar, served on Belgian waffles smothered in red fruit jam. With water, the diet continued to show the waistline little mercy. We drank unctuous butterscotch sauce and bites of millionaire’s shortbread coated the teeth. Sweet chocolate covered oat biscuits were dipped into a can of condensed milk as the guilt levels soared. Water lightened things somewhat with the introduction of more fruit, in the form of mandarin and papaya with some muesli. A slice of fruitcake with quince preserve, and delicate, brittle brandy snaps. The taste was tangy and fizzy, fruit turned up to 11. Honeydew melon, mango, creamed coconut, Tunnock’s teacakes, Italian meringue, rich oak and a sweet whipped cream fattiness left us wondering how many star jumps we needed to do to cancel out this sinful indulgence.
