The nose was sweet (Victoria sponge, Turkish Delight, Demerara, strawberries and cream) and perfumed (pot-pourri, freesias, roses, prosecco) reminding us of old-fashioned ice-cream parlours, or summer-time garden celebrations; tiny hints of grapefruit and wasabi to finish. The palate seemed gentle, silky and intriguing – a bitter-sweet evocation of long years in good wood – fruity (pineapple, raspberry Chewits, pick n mix) with powder puff, champagne mousse and ‘blowing up balloons’. The reduced nose took us to summer parks with flowers, sun lotion and ice-cream vans. The palate had tropical fruits, ice-lollies and pink wafers – given time it became a rewarding, even emotional experience.

DRINKING TIP: Summer time – special occasions – and it really doesn’t need water.
